Indian Music

Indian music is one of the oldest and the richest in the world. In India, the word music is called as SANGEETHA which means the art of singing, playing of instruments and dancing. Indian music is composed of two major components namely RAGA and TALA. Raga is the structure of melody whereas Tala is the structure of rythm. The former deals with the rise and fall of sounds and the latter deals with the pattern of beats.

Tala is the pulse of Indian music. The term Tala is derived from the Sanskrit word 'Tal' which means to strike with palms. Early musicians may have employed claps or palm-strokes to mark time in dance and music which later developed into a complicated system of 108 talas of classical music. It is a time cycle that remains fixed through out a particular rendering. Tala, binds music together and offer a regularity that calms the mind.

Raga is the basic scale or note-pattern of a melody formed by selecting notes from the thirteen tonal intervals, conventionally established in the octave space. The notes are selected from ascending as well as descending progressions. They are Sa, Re, Ga, Ma, Pa, Dha, Ni in the ascending order and Sa, Ni, Dha, Pa, Ma, Ga, Re, Sa in the descending order. Frameworks, thus provided by the selected notes function as the ground-plan. Musicians can elaborate Ragas on the basis of this plan and create more tonal patterns pleasing to the ears of the listeners.

In India two types of music exits namely Hindustani and Carnatic. The former is follwed in the North while the latter in South.

Hindustani music offers various kinds of music namely Dhruvapada, Khyal, Thumari, Tappa and Ghazal. Some of the well known instruments used in Hindustani music are
  • the sitar.
  • the sarod.
  • the rudraveena.
  • the santoor.
  • the flute.
  • the shehnai .
  • the sarangi.

Carnatic music require deeper understanding of vocal notes. It is rigid and deeply spiritual. The important element in carnatic music is "Kirti", a composition of three elements. The three great composers of carnatic music called TRINITY of carnatic music are Thyagaraja, Shyama Shastri and Muthuswamy Dikshithar. Some of the instruments used in carnatic music are
  • the flute.
  • the violin.
  • the veena.
  • the nadaswaram.
  • the gottuvadyam.
Some of the music festival celebrated in India are :
  • Chembai Music Festival, Kerala in September.
  • Dover Lane Music Festival, West Bengal in December-January.
  • Saptak Music Festival, Gujarat in January.
  • Sawai Gandharva Sangeet Mahotsav, Maharashtra in December.
  • Tansen Music Festival, Madhya Pradesh in December.
  • Thyagaraja Music Festival, Tamil Nadu in January.

Osama - A brief history

Yet another tape from Osama-bin-Laden stating that West is against the Islams and asked his followers to go to Sudan to fight a proposed UN force. This has become routine since America's war against terror in Afganistan, but still have to find this man who says messiah of islam. Who is this man? What is his background? So many questions......

Lets see who this man is and his life history....

  • Born in Saudi Arabia to a Yemeni family.
  • Left Saudi in 1979 to fight against invasion of Soviet in Afganistan.
  • Ploughed inherited fortune into armed activities.
  • Rarely seen in public.
  • Reported to have at least three wives.
  • Aged 49.
  • Head of the terrorist group Al Qaeda.
Is he a hero or Villain???

Wanted by the CIA for his alleged connections in thew 1998 bombings of American embassies in Africa and on many other international criminal charges.

However he is a hero to many young people in Arab for his fight against discrimination of Islams by the west.

Some of his criminal charges are:
  • 1993 World Trade Center bombings.
  • 1996 killing of US soldiers in Arab.
  • Nairobi and Dar es Salaam Bombs.
  • 2000 attack on USS cole in Yemen.
  • 9/11 attack on World Trade Center.
  • Bombings in Madrid killing as many as 250 people.
From where does he get money to buy arms????

His power is funded on a personal fortune earned by his family's construction business in Saudi Arabia.

The Afghan jihad was backed with American dollars and had the blessing of the governments of Saudi Arabia and Pakistan.

He received security training from the CIA itself, according to Middle Eastern analyst Hazhir Teimourian.

While in Afghanistan, he founded the Maktab al-Khidimat (MAK), which recruited fighters from around the world and imported equipment to aid the Afghan resistance against the Soviet army. Egyptians, Lebanese, Turks and others - numbering thousands in Bin Laden's estimate - joined their Afghan Muslim brothers in the struggle against an ideology that spurned religion.

49.6

I was at my friend's place when this happened. It was the first one day between India and Pakistan at Karachi. We were following the scores through the net. At the end of India's innings the score was displayed in the site as 327 in 49.6 overs. On seeing this myself and my friend were very happy. My friend was so happy that he uttered the following:

"Dai India kalasitaanga da. 327 athuvum 49.6 overs than aayirku da innum innings mudiyala da".

On hearing this i laughed a lot. I couldn't control my emotions. Even my friend couldn't control his emotions. It was a day which i cannot forget. A nice day in my life....

A Letter from Dr.Abdul Kalaam

This is a letter written by Dr.A.P.J.Abdul Kalaam.....

"I was in Hyderabad giving this lecture, when a 14 year old girl asked me for my autograph. I asked her what her goal in life is.

She replied: I want to live in a developed India .

For her, you and I will have to build this developed India . You must proclaim. India is not an under-developed nation; it is a highly developed nation.

Do you have 10 minutes? Allow me to come back with a vengeance. Got 10 minutes for your country? If yes, then read; otherwise, choice is yours.

YOU say that our government is inefficient.

YOU say that our laws are too old.

YOU say that the municipality does not pick up the garbage.

YOU say that the phones don't work, the railways are a joke,

The airline is the worst in the world, mails never reach their destination.

You say that our country has been fed to the dogs and is the absolute pits.

YOU say, say and say.

What do YOU do about it?

Take a person on his way to Singapore.

Give him a name?

YOURS.

Give him a face?

YOURS.

YOU walk out of the airport and you are at your International best.

In Singapore you don't throw cigarette butts on the roads or eat in the stores.

YOU are as proud of their Underground Links as they are.

You pay $5 (approx. Rs.60) to drive through Orchard Road (equivalent of Mahim Causeway or Pedder Road) between 5 PM and 8 PM.

YOU comeback to the parking lot to punch your parking ticket if you have over-stayed, identity.

In Singapore you don't say anything, DO YOU?

YOU wouldn't dare to eat in public during Ramadan, in Dubai.

YOU would not dare to go out without your head covered in Jeddah.

YOU would not dare to buy an employee of the telephone exchange in London at 10 pounds (Rs.650) a month to, "see to it that my STD and ISD calls are billed to someone else."

YOU would not dare to speed beyond 55 mph (88 km/h) in Washington and then tell the traffic cop, "Jaanta hai main kaun hoon (Do you know who I am?). I am so and so's son. Take your two bucks and get lost."

YOU wouldn't chuck an empty coconut shell anywhere other than the garbage pail on the beaches in Australia and New Zealand.

Why don't YOU spit Paan on the streets of Tokyo?

Why don't YOU use examination jockeys or buy fake certificates in Boston?????

We are still talking of the same YOU.

YOU who can respect and conform to a foreign system in other countries but cannot in your own. You who will thro w papers and cigarettes on the road the moment you touch Indian ground.

If you can be an involved and appreciative citizen in an alien country, why cannot you be the same here in India?

Once in an interview, the famous Ex-municipal Commissioner of Bombay, Mr.Tinaikar, had a point to make.

"Rich people’s dogs are walked on the streets to leave their affluent droppings all over the place," he said. "And then the same people turn around to criticize and blame the authorities for inefficiency and dirty pavements. What do they expect the officers to do? Go down with a broom every time their dog feels the pressure in his bowels?

In America every dog owner has to clean up after his pet has done the job.

Same in Japan. Will the Indian citizen do that here?"

He's right.

We go to the polls to choose a government and after that forfeit all responsibility.

We sit back wanting to be pampered and expect the government to do everything for us whilst our contribution is totally negative. We expect the government to clean up but we are not going to stop chucking garbage all over the place nor are we going to stop to pick a up a stray piece of paper and throw it in the bin.

We expect the railways to provide clean bathrooms but we are not going to learn the proper use of bathrooms.

We want Indian Airlines and Air India to provide the best of food and toiletries but we are not going to stop pilfering at the least opportunity.

This applies even to the staff who is known not to pass on the service to the public.

When it comes to burning social issues like those related to women, dowry, girl child and others, we make loud drawing room protestations and continue to do the reverse at home. Our excuse?

"It's the whole system which has to change, how will it matter if I alone forego my son's rights to a dowry."

So who's going to change the system? What does a system consist of?
Very conveniently for us it consists of our neighbours, other households, other cities, other communities and the government.

But definitely not me and YOU.

When it comes to us actually making a positive contribution to the system we lock ourselves along with our families into a safe cocoon and look into the distance at countries far away and wait for a Mr. Clean to come along & work miracles for us with a majestic sweep of his hand or we leave the country and run away.

Like lazy cowards hounded by our fears we run to America to bask in their glory and praise their system.

When New York becomes insecure we run to England .

When England experiences unemployment, we take the next flight out to the Gulf.

When the Gulf is war struck, we demand to be rescued and brought home by the Indian government.

Everybody is out to abuse and rape the country.

Nobody thinks of feeding the system.

Our conscience is mortgaged to money.

Dear Indians, the article is highly thought inductive, calls for a great deal of introspection and pricks one's conscience too?..

I am echoing J.F. Kennedy's words to his fellow American to relate to Indians?.

"ASK WHAT WE CAN DO FOR INDIA AND DO WHAT HAS TO BE DONE TO MAKE INDIA WHAT AMERICA AND OTHER WESTERN COUNTRIES ARE TODAY "

Lets do what India needs from us."

Autograph

Life is a mixed bag.It has everything from happiness to sorrowness to embrassment. Everyone wants to remember those golden days which they enjoyed. Everyone will pen down those days in a dairy to remember forever.Since i dont have the practice of writing dairy i use this tool to pen down those memorable days of my life.

18/10/1984
-when i was born on this world.

1988 June-
when i first joined school. This day is very special in my life as on this day i met my best friend Karthikeyan who was my classmate till 12th standard. But he studied well than me and hence went to SVCE and i went to St.Joseph's.

As days passed, then came 2001 Dec when myself, karthikeyan and few other friends were playing cricket. My friend hit the ball high in the air.It fell on a old man's head and blood started coming. The whole park was against us which is obvious. That old man started shouting and another fellow went to call police. But another fellow stopped him saying that we are students. The old man asked us to take him to the hospital and we did so.There he said "sister operation pannanumna pannidunga, selavu evvalavu aanalum ivanga paarthpaanga". I got stunned a minute. But everything went well and the day passed. However i didnt sleep well that night with that incident haunted me a lot.

Then July 2002 when i got admission in St.Joseph's.I really didnt like the college till the 4th year during which i enjoyed a lot.

Then Feb 2003 when i met one of the most important person in my life. She was a source of inspiration for me when ever i was in distress. She encouraged me a lot all through my college life.

I need to mention my other friends as well especially Jagadish, Bhargav, Balaji, Saravanan, Prakash. They were with me throughout my college life and sure ll be forever.I learnt a lot from them and i learnt how to manage things efficiently through Jagadish. He also taugt me lot about business and he was one of my inspiration which made me to write CAT. However i performed badly.

It was July 2003 (3rd semester of my college life) when i met my girl. But never approached her.

Then 29 th September 2005 when i got placed in Infosys.I think my happiest moment in my life as i had a bad experience the previous year or two during a personality development programme when that guy told that i ll not get placed as my communication skill was bad.

Then it was January 2006 when myself and my school friends were talking on the road when police came and took us away. But was let off later.

Then comes the important phase of my life. It was fag end of my college life when i got great friends. It was around January and March 2006 when i started speaking to them. But as days passed i felt as if we were talking for years. I enjoyed each and every moment i passed with them.

I have penned down only those days which i cherished in my life.I am not interested to post those sorrowful days in my life as i need to enjoy each and every moment of my life and never want to think of those bad old days.

Why I started blogging

Blogging is one of the powerful tool to expres one's view. Some may do it to say some message to this world like the one which published Clinton-Lewinsky controversy. But to be frank i started blogging just because i had no other work.I was so free that my scrap count in orkut increased from single digit to 1000 within a span of 3 months.Eventhough i made lots of good friends through orkut, i had so much time other than that.So from my friend especially Jagadish Kumar i got this idea.So i started blogging.I think this will be a good idea for anyone who are jobless.Infact one can learn a lot from this.So why waiting if you are jobless like me,start blogging.......... hehehehhehehehe
